Discover the person behind the author of the greatest book on America and democracy
Gracious readers,
Bonjour from magnificent Normandy!
I write to remind you to join us for a very special event happening today: at 1pm EST, I’ll be facilitating a conversation about Alexis de Tocqueville with members from his family live from his historic home here in Normandy, France.
Tocqueville is known as an astute political thinker. His Democracy in America is often lauded as the best book on America and the best book on Democracy. This conversation will be a unique opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Tocqueville as a person. What and who influenced him? How was he raised? What was his life here at the château like? And how is his family working to keep his legacy alive today?
Discover all this and more today at our conversation LIVE from Tocqueville’s historic castle at 1pm EST.
I hope you’ll join us!
And stay tuned for a very special CR Subscribers-only event in the second half of August. CR patrons will be invited to an exclusive conversation with me and Tocqueville’s family to discuss Tocqueville’s life, their work at the Tocqueville Foundation, and more. Subscribe now to be the first to be notified about this exciting event in August!
When visiting America, Tocqueville observed that regimes, such as democracies, were not supported by institutions alone. Equally as important is the virtue, norms, and habits of individuals citizens. He wrote,
The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens.
I hope that this event can inspire and remind us of the great promise our democratic and American way of life holds—and the role we each have to sustain it.
Feel free to register and share this invitation, even if you’re not able to make the time. All registrants will receive a copy of the recording.
Looking forward to seeing you today!
Warmly,
Lexi
